Consulate General of Ireland in New York to Serve as Major Underwriter for Easter 1916: Pittsburgh Remembers

Joins a Growing List of Partners to Support the Region’s Effort to Commemorate the Republic of Ireland’s First 100 Years

Pittsburgh, PA, January 26, 2016 – The Pittsburgh 1916 Easter Rising Committee, which was formed to plan the region’s commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the pivotal event that led to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland, has announced that the Consulate General of Ireland in New York has committed to serve as a major underwriter and partner in the planning and hosting of Easter 1916: Pittsburgh Remembers.Irish Consulate Logo FINAL

As part of its support, the Consulate General has provided a “micro-grant” to help fund the Pittsburgh project’s public awareness and education efforts.

“We are extremely grateful that the Consulate General of Ireland in New York has selected this Pittsburgh initiative for its support,” said Sarah McAuliffe, co-chair of the Pittsburgh 1916 Easter Rising Committee.

“While the financial support is critical to our success, even more significant is the goodwill that is generated when our project is sanctioned and supported by the very Republic we are working to honor,” added James Green, committee co-chair.

Cities around the world that will mark the Centenary of The Rising with special events and programs include: Washington, D.C., New York, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne, Brasilia, London, Abu Dhabi, Helsinki, among many others.

About Easter 1916: Pittsburgh Remembers

The Pittsburgh 1916 Easter Rising Committee was formed to plan and conduct the region’s commemoration activities of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland.  These activities will be part of the global commemoration of the Irish Republic’s 100th anniversary.  These activities will follow the theme: Easter 1916: Pittsburgh Remembers. The Rising is largely regarded as the pivotal event that led to Ireland’s War for Independence, and ultimately, the establishment of what we now recognize as the Republic of Ireland.

Easter 1916: Pittsburgh Remembers will feature a series of activities and events that will culminate April15-17,  2016, just prior to the anniversary of The Rising, when it will host a three-day event featuring educational, athletic, cultural, entertainment, social and interactive sessions.
